“We have issued a notice to Ekta Kapoor after a complaint filed by Ipsita Roy Chakraverti who has taken offence with the way witches are allegedly portrayed in the film. She has been asked to be present before the commission on April 9,” a leading daily quoted NCW chairperson Mamta Sharma as saying.
Sharma even voiced her displeasure with the promos of the film.
Ek Thi Daayan' marks Konkona Sen Sharma's maiden tryst with horror genre and she is happy to collaborate with Vishal Bhardwaj and Ekta Kapoor for the movie. She says her character has mysterious relationship with co-star Emraan Hashmi.
'Ek Thi Daayan', Bhardwaj and Ekta's joint production venture, is a screen adaptation of Konkona's father Mukkul Sharma's story.
The 33-year-old, not willing to reveal much about her character in the film, said: "My relationship with Emraan is a very mysterious thing. Emraan has to deal with evils on many levels and that's it. I am not allowed to talk about it.
The National Award winning actress was on a break for some time and she was last seen on the big screen in a brief role in Bhardwaj's 2011 black comedy '7 Khoon Maaf', based on Ruskin Bond's short story 'Susanna's Seven Husbands'. She had worked in his 'Omkara' too where she had an important role to play.
“It is quite obvious from the trailer that the film seems to encourage witchcraft which is not considered good for the society. Today`s generation does not know of witchcraft and I don`t think we need to educate the youngster on something that is not considered right by the society,” she said.
Ipsita Roy Chakraverti - a Wiccan priestess based in India - had approached the President`s office with the complaint against Balaji Telefilms and the producers of `Ek Thi Daayan`. This was later referred to the National Commission for Women.
